Story continues..AR3a is a home speaker, nothing more. It is very unfair to compare to something ...
Continue from previous post..
Pros:
-Very compact in size, can produce deeper, richer lows better than typical 12 in woofer enclosure.
-Dome mid and tweeter. Excellent dispersion and response.
-Good cross-over cutoff freq. at 575 hz and 5k, my personal favorite.(not 525 Hz)
-Inexpensive speakers, excellent price/performance ratio.
This AR3a speakers made speaker music sound real music, violin, piano, stuff like that sound lifelike. Excellent string speakers. Deep deep sound stage, soft highs, nice harmonics. good lows too, feels like waves of things attacking you when played pipe organ...lol..open and transparent mid-band. Very smooth sounding overall and close you eyes, lol...you feel like in a concert hall. Technically, it has nearly flat responses across the spectrum with only a couple of exceptions at/near cross-over point. 4 to 5 db drop, that is not bad at all. The low end start to roll-off at about 50hz, where at 10khz, hi end starts to drop. Very acceptable. Outstanding speakers at the time at such low price. I would not rate that invincible like others said...You kidding me? lol...
Cons:
-Power hungry speakers,(not really, not at 86db/m/w. I have had worst)
-Higher cost for matching amps, slightly picky
-Not very good durability
The AR3a speakers are so inefficient, which required huge amount of power to drive. That was before 1970, lol....70s, high wattage power amps were so easy to obtain, It wasn't a problem at all, just cost more, lol...I would say better to have 100 watts amp or more with over 100 damping factor to drive it provided it can deliver hi current when peak out. Solid-state amps, what else? Cheap 100 watts amps not the greatest because lack of current output lol...These AR3a speakers don't seem to last very long. It's tweeter gets over heat easy due to lack of cooling (no ferro fluid available till next generation). The foam thing of the woofer looses the elastic effect over time, could be disintegrated. Some said the mid-range dome is lack of dispersion which I don't agree. It is superior to most cone design even I don't really care for dome drivers in general. Some said it is a heavy bass sounding speaker, and some don't....It is very subjective. Would not recommend using tube amps to drive it, the bass sound shitty..lol..
I have a lot more to say, but this is already boring. Thank you all for your time.
