yes, earning more or less really many many times not depends on "years" work!! some ladies come out for two years can jump and jump, really no standard..not only for IT but all kind of jobs!!!
But IT is different. Not matter how good her/his soft skills are, only the hard skills can help him/her to accomplish the task and/or solve the problem at hand regardless of being the manager or being the ground trooper.
BTW, it is not a matter of gender. I have once "worked" with a guy whom cannot read, write or speak properly in Cantonese, in Mandarin or in English. And he "helped" the company not only to lose business of several hundreds of thousands of HKD plus long-term maintenance income. But this guy still work for the company as of today. Who knows he has sold his soul together with his behind...
You need to jump around, either within your company if it is a large corporation, or to another company. I have always work for large corporations, and have been jumping around different departments within a company, or going to another company. Each time I jumped I always managed to get a decent increase in pay, as much as 25 percents. So, jump!
