回復 t-shiper #2 的帖子

唔知幾時香港先准許這類車揸。

你睇政府話支持環保但又冇相關行動就知......應該冇機會發生....

Please excuse me for answering this thread in English because I am responding this from work.

Let's get all the bad stuff out for BionX:
1.  the hub motor has a lot of inherent drag, the magnets in the motor create a lot of drag which make this type of design not the best candidate for free wheeling, e.g. if your bike can normally roll down from a steep decline at 35 mph, you can only go down at 27 to 28 mph; that is why a lot of people don't like a direct drive hub motor design.  To offset for the motor drag, BionX suggests you always operate it with some sort of assist.  That is why I had said before it is hard to detect any assistance in level 1 (35%).  Since power is very addictive, I end up riding with it in level 2 or 3 most of the time.

2.  The 350 watt motor is not powerful enough, life is really full of compromise, the law in Europe said no motorized vehicle can exceed 25 kph, in North America it is 32 kph or 750 watt motor whichever is lower on its own, that means in Europe the electric assisted bike can ride faster than 25k (motor+pedalling)  but not higher on its own.  Any faster will require registration and insurance.  For such low limit, you don't really need a big motor.  Also we have to strike a balance between speed and range, a powerful motor will require a much heavier battery to power it along, my 48 volt 8.8 mh lithium manganese battery weigh 7.7 lb can provide me with a range of almost 55 miles, if I ride a Crystalite or Papa Motor's 1000 watt hub motor, my battery need will be twice as much and only cover half the distance.

3.  Very expensive, you really get what you pay for here.  A well design kit like the BionX uses top-notched material, the battery is 48V lithium manganese vs the more common lithium iron phosphate battery; the controller (CPU) is build into the battery pack; hub motor weigh 7.5 lb is one of the lightest in the industry and you can run a 9 speed freewheel with it.  The bottom line is you feel quality everywhere with this design.

For people who want to fully enjoy the BionX and distance travelling is not a concern, I would strongly recommend you leave the power assist at level 3 and 4, you get a real blast out of the powerful motor and you can literally pass any bike on the road at will, very exhilerating.

Over the weekend, I did a 42 miles ride on my bionx equipped trike, I covered 42 miles in 2 hours and 15 minutes with a lot of hill climbing.  In a stretch of 7 degree up hill climb for about 2 miles. I went up at a speed of over 19 mph versus 11-13 mph on a road bike.  I am more than happy with the performance.

I will shoot some pictures over the weekend and post it up on the site.
