The Dynaco Stereo 70 tube power amp is an affordable classic ! They are the best selling amps in Hi Fi history. It is also ranked #1 by the Absolute Sound as the world's most significant power amp of all time. The ST 70 could be found anywhere in the world. From audiophiles home to junk yard. If you are very lucky, you might pick one up next to nothing. Well, happened to me for $35 USD, almost new and excellent working condition.
Please check out my previous post on the technical aspect of the ST 70:

Stereo 70
The sound of the ST 70 is quite satisfactory in general. It rather laid back, warm, and somehow, reminds me of some older Mcintosh. It has been called as poor men's Mcintosh for years. It is known for it 3 dimensional rendition. Clear mid-range, pretty much what a good tube amp suppose to do. Perfect for some classical, jazz, easy listening in general. The ST 70 doesn't have ideal responses at either end of the spectrum (hi, low). Partly because it is a low price amp using marginal parts to cut cost. There wasn't anything wrong with it's design. It has so much potential waiting to be discovered by simply using better parts and alter the circuits, just a bit.
Modified ST 70
After modification (see my previous post), test drive the ST 70 with the Wharfedale E70 speakers. If it were a blind test, I would say that was a Marantz 8b. It completely got away from the shadow of the Mcintosh. No more laid back and easy, just like added a turbo lol.. Great dynamics from the softest to the loudest level of music, no choking and not kidding. Seems like it opened up the entire spectrum, especially at both extreme ends. A bit surprised, hum and noise were inaudible. Well defined bass (very surprise, its a tube amp), can feel the dbl bass player's finger strength, and guitar player's too. Was the very first time I heard/felt produced by the ST 70, my jaw almost dropped. Vocals were clean, it wasn't like there was a layer between singer and listener, just wide open. It even enhanced the 3 dimensional effect which I like meaning wider and deeper sound stage. It was much quicker, more airy, nice and warm sounding as well. All in all, the biggest improvements were both top and low end. Depth of bass, layers of wave at the lower region and crispy, crystal clear harmonics of the highs. $10.00 USD for parts and three days of work, was very profitable to my ears, lol... Can enjoy the Stereo 70 for hours and hours. I am looking forward to kicking Marantz 8B's arse when time comes to replace the new tubes, my favorite Chinese EL 34 tubes.
Fat boy tube
It only costed me $45.00 USD for the Stereo 70 including new parts. You never know what you get in to lol...sometimes flea market, junk yard, used stores, even pawn shops, you may find something nice.
The matching pre-amp was Dynaco PAS-3X tube pre amp(latest model). Paid $25 USD, but I spend a whole year looking for good stuff and bought 5 pieces including the world famous Marantz 7C & 7T from the flea market...got up 5am in the morning, no kidding ! It was at least the same condition as below, maybe a bit better, was mint ! It was once every two weeks for a year..to look for good gears cheap.
