Black ivory coffee, found in the excrements of elephants in Northern Thailand, is considered to one of the most expensive brews in the world. These 20 elephants are fed with Arabica beans and fruit. Once the coffee fruit passes the digestive system of the pachyderms, the coffee beans within lose their bitterness only to gain fruitiness and earthy tones. Introduced by Canadian entrepreneur, Blake Dinkin, black ivory coffee is being distributed to luxury hotels in northern Thailand, the Maldives, and Abu Dhabi and costs $50 per cup or $500 per pound. World's Most Expensive Coffee Made From Elephant Dung
One of the most expensive cups of coffee in the world is made from beans that have been eaten, digested and excreted by elephants. Known as black ivory, the coffee is sold at around 50 dollars for a single cup and is only available at resorts in the Maldives and Thailand called Anantara hotels.
The resort released a statement regarding the process of coffee production and why it is the most effective method saying, "research indicates that during digestion, the enzymes of the elephant break down coffee protein. Since protein is one of the main factors responsible for bitterness in coffee, less protein means almost no bitterness."
A similar process for removing coffee's bitterness is taking the beans from civet dung and processing them to be brewed into the second most expensive cup of coffee in the world, selling for a retail price of around 30 dollars per cup.
Civets are nocturnal, furry, cat like mammals that are found in South East Asia and Africa. 'Elephant Poop Coffee' Goes for 50 Bucks A Cup
It is Friday and to honor this beautiful initiation of the weekend, here some extra super random news, I couldn't help but report on. If you are tired of the same old cheap coffee every morning you may want to consider traveling to Northern Thailand, where a herd of 20 elephants, is pooping out some of the world's most expensive coffee. Yes you heard right - I did say pooping out. Earthy in flavor and smooth on the palate, the exotic new brew is made from beans, eaten by Thai elephants and plucked a day later from their poop. Apparently, a gut reaction inside the elephant creates the coffee's unique taste. Whether the thought of drinking this specialty brew makes you sick or excited, it doesn't change the fact that, at $500 per pound, it's among the world's most expensive coffee. For now, only the wealthy or well-traveled have access to this exclusive cup of coffee, which is called Black Ivory Coffee. It was launched last month at a few luxury hotels in remote corners of the world - first in northern Thailand, then the Maldives and now Abu Dhabi - with the small price tag of about $50 a serving.
