Sure, we’ve already seen Toyota’s FT-HS concept grace the automaker’s Detroit auto show stand last year, where it made its bow on the world stage. But it’s the comments of Peter Evans,;Toyota’s Australian head of product planning,;that have people talking again about;the FT-HS.
Buried in;Toyota’s press release for the Melbourne International Motor Show (from Feb. 29 until March 10, in case you’re planning a trip), Evans offers suggestions on how to interpret the car that concept planner Chiharu Tamura said has explosive power : "To really appreciate FT-HS, think of it as a ‘Prius on steroids’. Alternatively, it could be a vision for a Toyota Supra of the future." In fact, last year, we;reported that Toyota was already thinking along those lines.
The concept, whose full name is Future Toyota Hybrid Sports, is a front-engined, rear-drive;coupe;powered by a;3.5-liter V-6;in conjunction with an advanced version of Toyota’s hybrid drive system. The result? The FT-HS produces around 400 horsepower and has a projected 0-60 mph time in the;low four-second range, according to Toyota.
Is the FT-HS really a vision of the next Supra or is this just Toyota;generating press about a concept car that has been around for a while? Should the Supra name even be revived, and if it is, should it be a hybrid-powered car along the lines of the FT-HS? Let us know with your comments below.
