I have a simpler way to choose the right bike based on age.
For 30 and under, buy any bike you want;
30 and over, if you do a lot of group ride or long distance ride (35Km+), buy road bike;
for around town casual ride, buy a hybrid ( mountain bike with road bike wheelset);
for those that are over 50+ and with a bad back, consider a recumbent bike.

but I always prefer riding on the mountain, it's much more fun and challenging. I'm just addicted to it after my very first off road ride 18 years ago~

Buying a bike based on age is for newbies who don't know what they want.

You as an experienced rider can choose and pick your ride.
