The reason why cellphone (in terms of , voice/data cell network) use is prohibited on airplanes is actually more complicated. A main reason why cell network use is prohibited in flight is that a cell phone up high in the sky will be at same distance to multiple cell towers, violating fundamental design principles of the cellphone network.  The risk of using cell phone in flight is more with causing stresses on the cellphone network than interfering with an airplane's avionics. In fact, in the US, FAA (Administration of Aviation, responsible for safety of flights) did not ban use of Cell phone in fight, but FCC (Commission on Communications, responsible for regulating the cellphone network) did.

It is funny to know that it is FCC bans the use of cell phone in flight!

I just wonder, about the stresses problem, it can easily be solved by putting a maximum connecting stations limit on the cell phone.

Some of the technical details are beyond my knowledge of cell phone networks. But I know that some airlines are now experimenting pico-cell connections to cell phones in flight.  That further proves that cell phones do not cause interference with airplane avionics.
