Let me make up a story for this case....
I think a big piece of stone hit his head and then shattered into smaller pieces. The killer just picked up the bigger piece (next to his head) and bashed it into his head several times until it was fattened.
- OR -
There were many people throwing stones at him. When he was down, they drove over his head.
