The victims were five female and four male students who died instantly at the scene. The tragic event occurred after their car, a F500 Daihatsu Taruna skidded and hit a tree on the roadside.
The impact rendered the vehicle shapeless and unidentifiable. The average victim suffered severe head injuries, broken bones, and dismemberment. The nine victims were Kasin Anang (30), Rois Sudin (25), Firdaus Literature (25), Imron Rosadi (20), Maretha Medani Chryza (25), Erniati Ririn (22), Rosmaya Rani Dwi (25), Ifada Nia (23), and Purworejo, Pasuruan (28).
Fateful accident happened shortly after they left the Umbrella Culinary Tour of the villa after Songgoriti. The car driven by Joey Kasin swerved to the left of the sidewalk and hit a tree about 500 meters east of the Rock City Hall.
In that accident, two passengers were thrown from the car while other victims were trapped in the mangled car. "His foot was left in the seat. We tried to help out the victims trapped in the car by prying it with a crowbar." said Mulyo Miseno, one of the witnesses, who helped provide relief that afternoon.
Police Chief Stone, AKBP Tejo Wijanarko explained, the results of the examination was believed to be a blow out when the left rear tire burst as well as overloaded car and declining weather conditions. The driver swerved to the left onto the pavement and crashed into a tree. "The results of blow-out surprise checks for the condition of the tires are thin. We did not find any brake marks," he said during a news conference.
"We have not found any indication of alcohol to cause an accident," he said.
Tests later indicated alcohol did contribute to that crash.
