Bond market is not like the stock market and bonds don't trade in an open exchange like the New York Stock Exchange. An institutional bond dealer helps their clients (like mutual funds, pension funds, corporate accounts, etc.) to buy and sell bonds in the secondary market, it could be government bonds, corporate bonds, mortgages, etc.. The big bond houses Like Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs are also primary issuers of government bonds.
An instiutional bond traders usually covered a number of big accounts and their trading sizes can be in millions for each trade, that is why these traders are very well rewarded. Of course the big bond manager like Bill Gross of PIMCO will make hundred of million in a good year. |
