I got free upgrade about 10x before, but only work in LA and SF.
1. Make sure you have high tier membership.
2. Don't check in ahead for LA and SF at your departure city. For example, NY-LA-HK, don't check in for LA in NY.
3. Wait patiently at the side till counter start calling for waiting list. Of course, if it is full flight, then no luck.
4. Wait till about middle of waiting list, rush over. Wave your diamond, platium, whatever, and go check yourself in.
5. 1/2 of the time, your seat already taken, and economy class is full, you get free upgrade.
6. In the case if they tell you all seats are taken or you didn't check in on time, just point at those on standby and demand your membership seniority to be put in action. In airline playbook, those standbys are counting as no check in just like you do. If you didn't check in on time, so are those. Airline do not want the headache to rebook you. It is easier to rebook standbys.
7. Even you didn't get a bump up, don't worry. There is good chance, with all the confusions, you get double seated. In that case, immediately wave your high tier membership and demand you get the upgrade not the other guy. I once pissed a guy real good bc, while on the plane, we were double seated and he was asked to be bumped. Took out my membership and asked for his. Made a formal complain to the flight attendant that they didn't follow the proper airline procedure for double seated situation and get bumped instead.
7. You will make friends. Specially the airline managers in those 2 airports real quick. Just make sure you don't meet them anywhere without airport cameras and securities.
8. Always be nice, argue with smile on. You didn't do anything wrong but following their playbook. And don't ever piss them off, they can deny you boarding just bc you are ugly.
1/2 of the time, I got free upgrades and I also never miss a flight. Worst case, you sit where you belong at the first place.
And at end of year, take your 300-400k miles and sell them for 3-4k. Free lunch $. |
