Why you need really go to US? Your wife escort you to airport and see you check-in? Even so, try this:
After check-in and through immigration, go to airline service counter, tell them you have urgent matters and need to go to Singapore first before you can go to the US. I havn't try this before but didn't see why the airline will refuse (you buy an extra ticket from them).

I have to sign a document in the US at a particular time on a particular day . I will then have to attend a 7-day conference there. There will be more than 20,000 delegates at the conference so I guess no one will notice that I have disappeared. I will slip back in on the seventh day.

Then why bother to slip back on the last day? After you arrive US, attend the conference for the first 2 or 3 days, then to Macau and then direct back to HK!
I think day 2 can be GD + 18 or GD + D1
D1 services very good, you can seat in front of all the girls and then pick up one you like, then one by one, one weak point is that cannot do any BB soap etc....

My presence on the last day is to give people's the perception that I am there all the time. I will try to find people that I know on the last day and ask, "Where were you guys in the last few days. Gee! There are so many people here that we did not have the chance to bump into each other!" I also have to catch the original flights to and from the US which are booked by Government agent. Otherwise, I will have to explain to the Government if I suddenly change my itinerary
