【Do They Know It's Christmas? 40週年】



1984年12月3日，由 The Boomtown Rats 主唱 Bob Geldof 與 Midge Ure (Ultravox) 發起的大型慈善計畫 Band Aid，推出兩人合寫的公益單曲 "Do They Know It's Christmas?"，為當時深受飢荒所苦的非洲衣索比亞難民募款。

"Do They Know It's Christmas?" 首週進榜即登上冠軍，並且蟬聯五週，第一週就賣出破歷史紀錄的百萬張，截至1989年為止全球總銷量達1170萬張，而它更在一年內籌得800萬英鎊的善款，遠遠超出 Geldof 原本預期的7萬英鎊。

參與錄製 "Do They Know It's Christmas?" 的陣容可說都是英國流行樂壇的一時之選，包括了 Duran Duran、Spandau Ballet、Paul Young、Boy George & Culture Club、George Michael、Sting、Bono (U2)、Phil Collins、Paul Weller、Status Quo 的 Francis Rossi 和 Rick Parfitt 以及 Bananarama 等。雖然歌曲本身說不上超級出色，充滿西方世界偏頗視角的部份歌詞也招致批評，但其成功模式仍然發揮了深刻的影響力，隔年 USA for Africa 的 "We Are The World"、1986年 Hear 'n Aid 的 "Stars"，以及跨大西洋兩岸、同樣由 Geldof、Ure 兩人主導的 Live Aid (1985) 全明星慈善義演等，皆可說源自於此。
