I am a single dad with 3 children (10 and less). Wife died in 2008.
Luckily unlike the character in the above story, I can cook, can work shorter hours to suit, and we get by without the mother.
Do not underestimate children, who really know a lot more than you think. As long as they are positive that why their mother is no longer a part of their life.
I find that if anything, they have matured through the experience.
Every morning my children make me a sandwich to take to office to eat.
And they have become more obedient so that there are not much need to discipline.
I know another friend who also went through same issue just like me, except his daughter was 4 years old at the time. He is even more capable than me as a single dad. He supports me a lot lately.
I even get the time to surf 141HK daily.
