Grant Burge is a good producer, but this bottle is from the low-mid level of their entire range.
IMHO, Austrlain wine probably has the best fruit/dollar ratio of all wines. The problem is, we tend to drink them too young. It is not like, say Bordeaux, we can easily acquire a 20 year old wine and drink it at it's peak.
But with Ozzies, you cannot easily find a even 10 y.o. Shiraz in the retail shops. I buy my wines through Internet merchants, and I myself have a cellar in Australia, so I do drink aged Aussies.
I tell you what, you would not normally use the word elegance to describe Aussie wines, but with bottle aging, elegance does emerge. I drank a 2001 Henschke Keyneton Estate Shiraz/Cab last night and it was superb with excellent acidity and elegant fruit. Same with Grange 1992 I had a week ago. |
