a panel of opinionated winemakers can't tell the different!
Chardonnays from the 'True' Sonoma Coast Are as Good as White Burgundy (for a Lower Price)
Wine critic Elin McCoy participates in a blind-taste test, and the panel can't differentiate between the old world wine and the new.
It used to be easy to pick out California examples in a blind lineup. They were the flamboyant ones that tasted like ripe tropical fruit liberally laced with powerful vanilla notes from aging in new oak barrels, a style that wine aficionados love to hate.
When the labels were revealed, though—surprise. Wines tagged as Burgundy turned out to be from West Sonoma Coast. More lemon than pineapple, more mineral than butterscotchy, slim and racy instead of thick and oaky, they were what I call neo-Burgundian.
I remember reading an article years ago. they got a range of most expensive ones from Stellenbosch region, including a bottle that was tailor-made for a to London restaurant at a price of average monthly salary!
it was also a panel, wine masters, journalists and buyer. also blind-folded. and they all agree that they can hardly 'see' the difference amongst all those wines...
conclusion:
1) "Label" really is expensive
2) when you entertain your VIP guests, only feed they expensive one when they are drunk; you don't open the wine in front of them, just bring it out, u fill the bottle with cheap shit. Give the invoice to accounting and pocket the change
BTW, I just sort of helped a friend send out a container of cheap wine to China. So I have access to bottles (with compressed cork) now, so if anyone needs re-cork, let me know.
