What is happening in IT ?

All c hings here, I had a dinner gathering with 11 senior IT guys last night. Now only 1 still in the field. Others gone or retired. The guy who still in the field said that he is just waiting for the company to give notice of when to leave. He has been working in the company for 30 years and obviously the company does not want to pay his salary at the current level. If he leave the company, then promote a young guy or hiring a new one to replace him, salary cut to half. There is NO more IT future in HK. If you are really looking development, go to USA and see if you can get a job. In the states, Google, Apple, Oracle...... are not bad. Of course, you got to ensure you are qualified.

Working in the company for 30 years， the paid out package would be enough to retire。

In anywhere, with 30 plus years experience won't find a good job in IT field.
IT is for young people.

我只覺得cloud  computing  為出新版而出新，
講到 investment 好似好少， 但個tco 其實好高，
因為你從沒擁有過hardware 或 software

從公司立場，好處是不需花錢建立IT部門, 又有24小時提供應用，但大公司及財經機構最憂慮是資料保密。

Having been working for 30 years, you may say it should be time to retire - if you have a good retirement package. However, many employers may not offer a good package. Let's say a salary of HK$50K a month, if you can get a package - maybe $2M. Is that enough for the rest of life ? Certainly NO.

Cloud computing is the trend, but for sure not for a long period. Nothing in the IT industry can last long.

Comparing HK, China provides much more opportunities and it will be easier to find a job with better package. At least for the next 5 years.

One of the Chings above said that waiting for retirement is the only choice after working for 30 years. The is a hard fact but cruel. The point is that many IT guys do not have enough money for retirement at the age of early 50. I have a friend who used to be the General Manager of the biggest Printers Company and now running his own business but so far still losing money. He is now also a part-time insurance salesman.

A medical doctor  with what he learnt 30 years ago could still practise  today.
But an IT guy with knowledge learnt 30 years ago  could not earn his living   ...   not evrn as a  computer salesman.

IT do it in the USA la. I graduated years ago from HKU. Got a job in USA as I realized there's no future in Hong Kong, not just in IT. In USA software and computer is always a hot job.
