I often compare those wine ratings with stock broker's recommendations. It was just like what happened about 15 years ago when we have the technology bubble.
First, none of those wine critics need to declare any potential conflict of interests, even though their rating may have material impact on the price of the wine.
Second, the inflation in the rating. 20 years ago, there is probably a handful of wines that get 100 points from RP, and any wine that got 90 or above is already excellent wine. Today there are probably over 100 wines that is RP100, and you need to get over 90 to be viewed as of "good quality".
Finally, the meaning of the rating/recommendation. Is the buy for a speculator, or is that for a retired old man. Same applied for wine. RP style is not necessary my style. Unfortunately, there is obvious Parkerization among wine makers i.e. they make wines that appeal to RP. There is even someone saying that there is a formula to follow and your wine can easily get RP90.
I won't say points are totally useless. It is one of the many reference that I will take a look. I personally trust Neil Martin a lot more than RP on Bordeaux, and follow Allen Meadow for Burgundy.
