Most likely...

(1) Your Lafite is fake
(2) It was not kept properly.  Many people like to show off their Lafite to friends, bring it in and out of their wine cabinet many many times and damaged the quality
(3) You drink it too early.  Normal Lafite would need at least 20 years to be "drinkable"

I had experience of opening an old bottle of Henschke and was horrified to find lots of sediments. After filtering the wine was exceptionally good .The cost 10 years ago was AUD $450.

It was just me.  I am only a beginning learner so drinking Lafite is properly wasting the wine

That is why you decant a wine like this. Normally if I drink this sort of old wines at home, I stand the bottle up for about 2 days to let the sediment sink to the bottom. If I take old bottles out to a restaurant, and usually these bottles are costly ones, I would make sure the food matches up to the wine and that means the restaurant knows me well and vice versa, I take the wines there a day or 2 ahead and leave instructions to stand up the wine and the timing of decanting before we arrive to eat.
The 82s I bought before cost me around AUS$200 in the late 90s and early 2000s

Not mean to be boasting, I have had numerous vintages of Grange starting from the 72. The latest Grange I had was the 91 in July 2014--I have always liked the 91 as it was not heralded as a great vintage, hence the price was more reasonable. It had the usual Grange attack, with suffused blue/black fruit and the moreish finish of plums and prunes and lavender. Elegant it was not, but somehow it was less brutal than the standard Grange. The 82 was similar, when I had it around 10 years ago; I liked it for its perfume and mouthfill. You need time for Grange; I find the American oak in young Granges can be a tad obtrusive, but with 20+ years of age, this tends to subside and blends well with the fruit.
The 82 Hill Of Grace was quite a different animal: one could use the term elegant for it, something very unusual about Aussie shiraz. In fact when I visited the winery in early 2000s and related my previous experience of the 82 to the owner, she quite agreed with me the 82 was very different from the others and that they liked it very much themselves. Of course the usual H of G is much darker/purpler and fuller (the 82 was ruby). Try the 90 (paid Aus$250 back then) and you will see what I mean.

"When I graduated from Uni in1987...The Hensckhe was around AUS$25 at the time and the Grange $45..."

the prices of  some of those cult wine have completely lost in touch with reality. The same could also be said bout big 8 from Bordeaux.

Unfortunately, those what we considered as "lost in touch" price help these wines look attractive to some people.

I have a few friends simply refuse to drink any wine that is less than $1,000 a bottle because these are "cheap" wines

The Grange was 80 and the Hill of Grace 81. Too bad then my palate was still rudimentary and I have little memory what they exactly tasted like. Suffice to say I stuck to cheaper wines afterwards and not bought another one of these till the mid-nineties when my financial situation was more steady, after I returned to HK to make real money and not having to pay up to 40% salary tax in OZ.
