Farmers (vintners included) and fishermen are the people I respect most in real life. They toll hard, their livelihood depends on the weather conditions, and they even risk their lives to provide us the most important thing in life: FOOD. It is sad that they make very little compared with the middleman.
You might think the people at DRC do very well financially, and indeed they do, but think of the efforts and investment they put in throughout the years to achieve what they have today. And also think of what people make in the secondary market; these guys make far more by flipping over these wines to the final consumers. I really hate those wine fund managers. They have somehow turned a consumer beverage into an investment product and inflate the prices; this is not unlike those real estate speculators who jack up the prices of housing.
Some twenty thirty years ago, Pommerols, First Growths, Yquems, DRCs, Dujac, Rousseau, Leroys, Guigal LaLas, Rayas, Selosse etc. were affordable drinks and in those days some of these guys were struggling to make ends meet ( some even had to sell to others like la Mission/Margaux). It is through their hard work and the growth of world wealth and thus demand that they are now doing well. I miss those days when I would drink them regularly on a monthly basis and they tasted elegant and not all Parker like ( read dark concentrated fruit bombs without identity). Recently I opened a 64 and 67 Latour for my and my wife's birthdays (our respective birth years)and they were oh so nice and velvety from a bygone era that you cannot recoup today. A super rich friend opened a 2003 Lafite and it was a totally different animal: it was powerful and fruity and very good, but Lafite, IMHO, should be feminine and not punchy.
Anyways, enough ranting and let' s toast to the primary producers. |
