They are good and actually good value. The reality is that the Dorro region was previously controlled by the large port producers such as Taylor's, Dow etc. These port producers bought the best grapes from the grape growers to make Port, and the grape growers use the low quality, excess grapes to make still wine and, of course the quality of the wine is poor.
In the past 20-30 years more and more grape growers start to realise that still wines made from high quality grapes provide much better return then selling those grapes to the port producers, and that's the real growth of the Douro still wine.
One of the best example is Xisto, a joint venture with the owner of Lynch Bages. Watson's used to carry this wine but was discontinued. I am also looking for this one so if anyone see this, please let me know (it may be easier to find this in Macau). The price is about HK$500. |
