NAPA (CBS SF) – The most powerful earthquake to strike the Bay Area in nearly 25 years will likely take a toll on wine industry after rocking the Napa area. The magnitude 6.0 quake crumbled walls in downtown Napa, sending bricks a debris into the streets and forcing the closure of nearby streets. Nearby, winemakers were rushing to see what damage was done to the region’s most famous export. “I went in to the winery,” said winemaker Aaron Miller. “A few of the barrels fell, but all of the wine is ok.”
Though the epicenter in American Canyon is south of most of the most esteemed Napa Valley wineries, many of the better known vintners store finished bottles much closer to the epicenter, where real estate is more affordable.
The total toll to the the $13 billion dollar Napa wine industry won’t be known for some days. CBS San Francisco will report those findings when the become available.
