微軟裁員1.8萬

【明報專訊】微軟收購諾基亞手機部門後整頓架構，昨宣布裁員多達1.8萬人，包括1.25萬工廠及專業職位，裁員人數相當於全公司14%人力，遠高於2009年裁員5800人，是微軟創立39年來最大規模的裁員。裁員計劃預計在明年中完成。投資者視裁員為微軟控制成本的積極措施，股價昨升至45.71美元的52周高位。

消息指出，受裁員影響的部門包括與諾基亞手機業務合併後重疊的部門及工程部。微軟目前約有12.7萬員工，其中3萬來自諾基亞。

公司39年來最大規模

納德拉(Satya Nadella)2月接任微軟總裁後銳意改組，履行在收購諾基亞手機業務後18個月內，每年節省6億美元成本的目標，以增強在手機及軟件領域的競爭力。微軟長年以提供個人電腦軟件為核心業務，但納德拉早前表示，未來將以手機及雲端業務優先。他認為微軟需更專注、更有效率，工程團隊亦需改革。

其他科技企業亦在精簡人手，惠普(HP)5月宣布，除已公布的3.4萬人裁員計劃，另再裁員1.6萬人。IBM早前亦裁員改組。過去一年，英特爾和思科亦裁掉相當於全體5%的員工。

大笨象如IBM 近年因為變形慢，生意不景，亦在世界各地不斷裁員！

The economy is getting a lot better.  Big company are always hiring and firing people.  It is normal.  If you have a strong technical background, you can find a job any where.  If your company is going to fire a lot of people soon, usually you will see it in advance.  First sign is that sales is not good, then there will be no raise, then there will be a hiring freeze.  At this point, the strong people in the team will find new jobs, and the company will not replace the people leaving...  

There's another reason why a company would announce a lay off.  When employee knows that there will be a lay off, a lot of people will start looking for work.  If they find a new job, the company doesn't have to pay severance package to lay them off, so the company saves money.  Unfortunately the people who stay in the company are the weaker ones who usually couldn't find another job, and since all the best people left, the team will get worse...

I have seen this happen too many times....

Actually I have a few friends working in IBM AU. It us not because they don't have enough work it's due to bad management decision and crap account managers singing under quote deals. Basically promise client they can provide support using 3 staff offshore staff but ended up using 4 AU staff. Long story short loosing money on all the contracts so they have to fire staff.

My company went from in house support to outsourced then off task (lv 1 to lv2 outsourced) and kept lv3 in house. Now recently we moved to managed services. Time is getting tuff.......

Those AMs should be fired for over commitment to customer resulted in not making profit for the projects.

These large companies always play the games in this way. They will fire a loy sometimes but will employ a lot later. MS, HP, IBM, ...
