The fine Rhone wines are no cheaper than Bordeaux. It is just that HK people know little outside Bordeaux. The most famous AC are Hermitage and Cote Rotie in Northern Rhone and Chateauneuf du Pape in Southern Rhone.
There are two AC that are rising stars: Cornas in Northern Rhone that has been a famous area for quite some time already. The really new one is Gigondas in Southern Rhone. It produce Chateauneuf du Pape style wine, has the same "red stone" soil type, but because it is north of CDP and on higher altitude, it is not as hot as CDP and thus the wines are said to be more elegant than CDP. It used to be just $1xx per bottle about 5-10 years ago, but now it is more like $2xx and some of the famous producers there sell their wines at price higher than typical CDP. |
