鸚鵡智慧不遜於海豚和黑猩猩，因為鸚鵡不光是『學舌』，它真的會『說話』及明白自己說的話。
美國鳥類學家艾琳·佩珀伯格(Irene Pepperberg)博士曾經通過研究鸚鵡模仿人類的語言來探索動物是否和人類一樣有意識。她所研究的一只非洲灰鸚鵡亞歷克斯(Alex)能夠說出超過80種不同的物體，7種不同的顏色及5種形狀的單詞，並能清楚地用所學的單詞組成有意義的短語，來表達自己的想法。如果它想要一塊綠色的積木，它就會說出來『綠色的積木』。因此，佩珀伯格博士相信鸚鵡模仿能力並不僅僅是簡單的模仿，而是可以了解所模仿的一些聲音的含義。

I have lots of them living around my home. Totally wild birds.

In the zoo, a parrot came over and told me "scratch cocky" and lower its head so that I can scratch its neck.. so trusting.

Another time, one fly straight next to me. "Hello" it said and hang around for a minute or 2. Then it felt I was boring and said "good bye" before it flew away.
