I always have reservations about these sort of the best of certain things in the world. You have panels judging the best restaurant, the best beer, the best car, the best girl (i.e. Miss Universe), the best city, the best university, the best winemaker, the best Chardonnay, the best Merlot, the best airline, the best airport, so on and so forth. What do they really mean? My opinion is you really have to try/experience it to judge for YOURSELF.
I have not tasted this Whiskey, and I had not even heard it, despite I lived in Australia for more than 12 years, partly because I was not an avid drinker of whiskey then and now. I did make a couple of tours to Scotland in the 90s, and tasted some whiskey. But even if the quality of this particular whiskey is very good, and I am sure it would be to be dubbed the best by a panel, it cannot be the best, to ME. Reason? Well, we are all prejudiced.Say how can a Japanese make car, as fast and as smart-looking it could be, ever beat a Ferrari?!! A Lagavulin 1973 will always be the best whisky to me as this was a Special edition given as present to me.
I have travelled to the so-called best cities (Auckland, in one poll, Melbourne, Copenhagen in others-you see, different panels cannot even agree with each other), eaten in some of the so-called best Restaurants ( Noma, Alain Passad, even Hong Kong' s Amber is on the list) the best Sushi ( Sushi Jiro in Tokyo), drunk the so-called best Cabernet Franc( Clos Rougeard's Le Bourg, which beat PETRUS in a blind tasting), quaffed the so-called best beer (once again this depends on which Newspaper Poll or which country' s panel), used the so called best Airports ( Singapore ChangI, Seoul Inchon, Heathrow etc.), and skied on the slopes of the so-called best resorts (Niseko, Whistler, Courchevel); I have NOT found them to be the best, to ME. They certainly are good, but my favourite restaurant in the world is one that the owner, the chef, the servers all know me by name and they know the way I like my food cooked-I won' tell you the name, suffice to say there are more than one, and in different cities. The best airport for ME, is the Hong Kong one, for obvious reason.
I always take these so-called best of whatever with a grain of salt.
I will never get to try the best woman I.e. Miss Universe, for sure; but that would always be my very own wife, who has devoted to me for more than 20 years and no woman in the world could beat her. |
