Yes, they are..wonder if you even listened to the sand-filled Wharfedale speakers.  Very unique sand filled enclosures, practically no box sound since you started hi fi a lot earlier than me.... It made Wharfedale famous at the time.  I was impressed.

No,not having a chance to audit the sand filled speakers.In those days,my friends usually custom-made the cabinets to match their furniture. They used the Goodman Tri-axials in mono enclsures and the sound was good,like the big Altec 604.My serious speakers were the AR 3a.

Sand filled cabinet was long gone when AR3a came out.  Guess you were a few years before me.  I started hi fi at the end of the AR3a era.
