I remember I had a couple of the Luxman pre-amps in the late 70s, early 80. CL 34 and C or CL 1000?..One with the touch mute button anyway. They were good, but how good..I don't remember.
The original CL 38 was probably the successor of the CL 32 and 34 in the early 80s, but it is a full size chassis, not slim line box as the CL 32 and 34.
Luxman makes hi quality valve gears traditionally with good resell values. True Japanese Hi End tube amp manufacture. Brand new CL 38U cost 4,000 USD shipped directly from Japan to US(ebay). Sounds like a good deal. My personal problems with some Japanese gears is just can't remember how good they are after a short while...never really impressed me.
The CL 38U, I am not convinced it is an exact replica of the original by just looking at the parts. More like a hybrid, heavy use of solid state devices especially as voltage regulators which is very good. If it didn't say復刻, and analog inputs in the back. It does look like a new or redesign. I expect this sounds better than the original, at least less noise. Maybe it is close enough to call it a duplicate. Well, just an educational guess anyway. I know very little about Luxman tube amps since I never owned one. Listen to them just a few times. Reason why Luxman caught my eyes because an editor/reviewer of HK's electronics and hi fi magazine used CL 32 back in the mid 70s and he loved it. Marantz 7C had all my love for tube pre amp and I had no room for another until......
"我說我: 睇測試前先睇睇有靚仔" CL 34 more 靚仔 to me (Just joking and messing around, hope you don't mind..hehe..)

"If the audio industry built gear that sounded as good as it did 50 years ago, there would NEVER be a need to re-issued anything!" Interesting quote from Amp/Preamp Asylum website. Correction-CL 38 was born in 1993. There were CL 35 and 36 before it. |
