Aruba Stamps
Aruba (/əˈruːbə/ ə-roo-bə; Dutch pronunciation: [aˈruba]) is a 33 kilometre long (20 mi) island of the Lesser Antilles in the southern Caribbean Sea, located 27 km (17 mi) north of the coast of Venezuela. Together with Bonaire and Curaçao, it forms a group referred to as the ABC islands of the Leeward Antilles, the southern island chain of the Lesser Antilles. Collectively, Aruba and the other Dutch islands in the Antilles are commonly referred to as the Netherlands Antilles or the Dutch Antilles.
DELONIX REGIA / FLAMBOYAN
The Royal Poinciana is endemic to Madagascar. The seed pods of the Royal Poincianas are used in the Caribbean as a percussion instrument known as the shak-shak or maraca.
It is very widely grown in the Caribbean, Africa, Hong Kong, the Canary Islands, Thailand and southern China.

The Golden Shower Tree is a medium-sized tree growing to 10 - 20 m (33 - 66 ft) tall with fast growth.
The yellow flowers symbolize royalty. The tree has strong and very durable wood and has been used in construction. It blooms in late spring.
IPOMOEA PES-CAPRAE / KELKI BIÑA
This plant, called "Beach Morning Glory" in English is a common tropical creeping vine belonging to the family Convolvulacea. It grows on the upper parts of beaches and endures salted air. It is one of the most common and most widely distributed salt tolerant plants and provides one of the best known examples of oceanic dispersal. Its seeds float and are unaffected by salt water.
ALLAMANDA CATHARTICA / TROMPET DI ORO
Allamanda Cathartiea (Golden Trumpet) is an ornamental plant native from Brazil. Its large, yellow flowers are very fragrant. This South American plant is thought to blossom best in full sunshine, and well drained soil. It is also used to treat malaria.
CATHARANTHUS ROSEUS / MAGDALENA
A plant originally from Madagascar. English names include Periwinkle and "Old maid". An endangered plant in the wild because of slashes and burn agriculture, it is fortunately widely cultivated in the tropics and subtropics. It is an evergreen sub shrub, cultivated for medicinal purposes in China, cures diabetes, malaria, and leukemia
NERIUM OLEANDER / OLEANDER
Oleander is one of the most poisonous of commonly grown garden plants, and can be very toxic if ingested in sufficient quantity.
Oleander flowers are showy and fragrant and are grown for these reasons.
BOUGAINVILLEA GLABRA / TRINITARIA
Paper Flower (Bougainvillea glabra), also known as lesser bougainvillea, is the most common species used for bonsai.
Tiny white flowers usually appear in clusters surrounded by colorful papery bracts, hence the name paper flower.
HIBISCUS ROSA-SINENSIS / CAYENA
Hibiscus rosa-sinensis is widely grown as an ornamental plant throughout the tropics and subtropics. The flowers are large, generally red in the original varieties, and firm, but generally lack any scent.
CORDIA SEBESTENA / KARAWARA SPAÑO
Cordia Sebestena is widely planted throughout the tropics and subtropics as an ornamental because of its bright orange flowers. It has dark green, oval shaped leaves, and grows oval shaped fruits that are edible, but not flavorful.
ECHINOPSIS LAGENIFORMIS / DAMA DI ANOCHI
Echinopsis lageniformis is called "Lady of the Night" or "Queen of the Night" because of its impressive, very large white flowers that bloom several times a year, always starting at nine o'clock of the evening until sunrise. In Aruba this cactus can grow up to 5 - 6 meters (15 - 18 ft) high. |
