I have 4 electric, 2 accoustic, 2 Basses( 4 strings & 5 strings). I bought mine from ebay.
My suggestion is look on ebay, type in the brand you like, and look for "CLASS B" gear. They usually have minor flaw (painting), but the price usually will be half of the original price. For the Electrics, I usually change the pickups and string and bring into a shop to have a "set up" done.
If you live in HK, try to find the Japanese made ESP guitars, really good quality X3!! But the price will be as same as entry level Gibson.

I suggest go take 1 on 1 lesson for a month, then buy instructional Dvds and books. Will learn much faster to play with friends. Buy CDs or DL songs from Metallica, Megadeath..then buy their guitar books. It is fun to play speed metal, it makes you "high"
