Bar tape should normally be replaced once every few years due to sweat from palms, by coating it with shellac will make replacing much more difficult.  Take this into consideration before applying.

禾矛玩 RB 5系巧色，有少少疑問....
MTB 5用 bar tape 用手膠，基本上十分耐用 (除非係海綿款)，幾年刀5洗換，踩單車時又一定會帶手套，手汗都應該5會落到手膠/bar tape，bar tape 都仍然會咁大損耗？

I am not talking about wearing out the bar tape but it will get dirty over time and become grungy looking, since it is not an expensive item most people will simply replace it once every few years.
Things that can dirty your bar tape could come from greasy fingers after changing flat tire or after reloading your chain; sweat from your palm can easily get into the bar tape because summer riding gloves are full of holes for ventilation, sweat can cause break down in the foam and making it less comfortable to hold on to overtime.
