92. Durham University
Durham University is distinctive. We seek to achieve the highest distinction in scholarship and research which makes a real difference to mankind. We are equally committed to excellence in education and the transmission of knowledge. But it is much more than that. The World Heritage Site at the heart of our University has been a centre of scholarship for over 1000 years. Our students come from all walks of life and from over 120 countries to experience a truly rounded education.

Our 16 distinctive colleges, ancient and modern, are residential communities of scholars - undergraduates, postgraduates and staff - which instil in our students a sense of community, leadership, social responsibility and the opportunity to explore their passion to make a difference in whatever sphere of life they choose.

Durham University offers its students a challenging and rewarding education through its ethos of research-led teaching combined with opportunities for personal development. We are committed to education, instilling in our students the ability to learn and think together with an emphasis on leadership, respect for others and social and environmental responsibility. We are preparing our graduates for the rest of their life.

At Durham, our students have direct access to some of the world’s finest academic minds – they learn how to learn and become self-starting, able to turn their hand to anything and make a difference in whatever field of endeavour they choose. Students are taught by leaders in their fields – people who themselves are making a difference through their research and teaching.

Whilst academic excellence is important, we recognise that academic success is only half the story – we encourage personal development and skills through participation in the widest variety of extracurricular activities. It is no surprise that our students are sought widely by employers and make their mark at national and international levels.

Durham welcomes the most talented students, whatever their background. Our student body comes from over 120 countries worldwide, an enriching experience for all. Competition for places is high: typically we receive about eight applications for every undergraduate place.
Nonetheless, we work hard to ensure that those students who will most benefit from the type of high quality education we offer can come to Durham.

Our undergraduate teaching combines traditional methods, such as personal tutorials, with the most advanced digital approaches. For example, we lead the UK’s only Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning for Active Learning in Computing. We seek to encourage student engagement where knowledge is obtained by sharing, problem-solving and creating. We generate innovative tools to support active learning techniques, revolutionising the learning environment to enable students to control the pace and style of their learning as well as to significantly enhance their employability.

93. University of St Andrews
St Andrews is Scotland's first University and the third oldest in the UK. For almost six centuries, we have proudly upheld the tradition of academic excellence, attracting scholars of international repute and students from all over the world.

Today, we continue to offer the latest in teaching and research, all within a superbly picturesque mediaeval setting. Although St Andrews is not a campus University, it has grown and developed with the town and is now comfortably integrated.

The University provides an invigorating intellectual climate in which staff have close contacts with one another and with colleagues in other U.K. and overseas universities and research establishments. All Schools in both the sciences and the arts are actively involved in pushing back the frontiers of knowledge.

Physically the University is closely integrated with the town; the modern purpose-built library and many academic Schools are located centrally. The growth in physical and mathematical sciences has been accommodated at the North Haugh on the edge of St Andrews. A modern sports centre with adjacent playing fields and halls of residence are also located in this area.

St Andrews is relatively small, despite being a "city", with a basic population approaching 20,000. The University population (staff and students) numbers nearly 9,000 with the result that it doesn't take long for new students to feel welcome in the community.

Over a quarter of a million people have graduated from the University since its foundation in 1904. Internationally acknowledged as a centre of excellence in a wide range of disciplines, we are part of the prestigious Russell Group – the 20 leading research universities in the UK.

The recent independent exercise to assess the quality of research in universities and colleges in the UK (the Research Assessment Exercise, RAE) placed us in the top ten of UK research intensive universities. More than half our schools were ranked in the top 10 in the country – including Electronic and Electrical Engineering, English, Modern Languages, Food Science and Education – and 61% of our research was judged to be ‘world leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’.

But our research is not just confined to individual departments; it extends across all faculties and schools, often crossing traditional subject boundaries. Collaboration and interdisciplinary research is at the heart of what we do. It means our staff and students are engaged in a wide range of projects that will change lives.

Learning and teaching
17 of our staff have been awarded National Teaching Fellowships (given to academics in recognition of their imaginative and innovative learning and teaching methods). That’s more than any other English university – reflecting the excellence of our teaching.

We are committed to our vision of a university which enables and inspires you to develop your full potential and become well equipped for the workplace. Study here and you’ll be taught by, and have access to inspirational academics who are actively involved in a diverse range of research. We offer you a wide choice of degrees ranging from the more traditional such as English or law, to emerging subject areas relevant to the modern world, such as new media or petroleum engineering.

We recently received the highest possible result from the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA). The QAA checks how UK universities maintain academic standards and quality, so that means you can be confident that we’re providing you with the very best academic standards.

What our students think
We have performed consistently well in the National Student Survey. 84% of students who responded said they were very satisfied or satisfied with their experience at the University of Leeds in the latest survey.

First-class facilities
A university of this size offers you some of the best facilities – from our environmentally-friendly student services building to the new £14million gym and pool which has more fitness facilities than at any other UK university.

You will also have access to the very best academic resources, including one of the biggest university libraries in the UK. And we have some of the best computing resources in the country (The Guardian, May 2008). Our computer rooms are open long hours, some 24/7, ensuring you can study when it suits you. We are committed to e-learning and new technology to provide greater flexibility in the way you study and learn.

Leeds is a fantastic place
More than 750,000 people live within the city boundaries, making it a thriving, lively place. Many students who come to Leeds to study stay on to live and work here after they graduate. Located at the heart of the UK, Leeds is a city of regional, national and international importance. The city is well renowned as a centre for arts, sport, leisure, entertainment, nightlife and is surrounded by beautiful, accessible countryside.

Our community contribution
Our contribution to the local economy is around £860million a year and we're home to venues for music, theatre and art – as well as public lectures. Over 2,000 of our students volunteer in the local community –five times the national average. As well as our local responsibilities we are working hard to minimise our impact on the environment and, since 2005, have held Fairtrade university status, offering products endorsed by the international certification system that ensures farmers and workers in developing countries get a fair deal.

A university that listens to you
At the University of Leeds your voice, your ideas and your opinions count. We nurture a spirit of enquiry, discovery and achievement. This, along with excellent academic study will help you develop into a well-rounded graduate who will be highly regarded and sought after by employers.

At the University of Leeds you can unlock your potential and become the best that you can be. We look forward to welcoming you to the University of Leeds.

CityU is positioned along the axis that links professional education with applied research. Our research work serves many objectives. These include: establishing a leading role at an international level in an area of research; nurturing promising new areas; applying research results to support economic and social development; and refreshing and enlightening teaching by scholarship at the cutting edge of disciplines and professional fields. Principally, basic and applied research and R & D activities are concentrated in six University Research Centres, seven Faculty Research Centres, three Applied Strategic Development Centres and three Applied R & D Centres in the Pearl River Delta Region. A large number of groups and laboratories are active at the departmental and inter-departmental levels. We also collaborate closely with industry and commerce, producing direct benefits for society in Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland.

CityU has become an international University with links to many high-quality institutions on the mainland and overseas. The University has embraced the philosophy of a broad student mix. We encourage student and staff interactions to create a multi-cultural environment on campus, to enhance students exposure to other cultures and stimulate out-of-the-box thinking. Through the exchange of faculty and students with mainland and overseas institutions, we form a cultural bridge between the mainland and the world. By working together and sharing ideas with people in the Asia-Pacific region and beyond, our students develop global perspectives and gain exposure.
