Well! by looking at the picture, I think your friend's car has suffered major damage from the impact of the truck. The force of the collision had broken the left front end axle, I believe the truck hitting(T-Bone) the car making contact, pushing it about a good 15 feet or more, obviously bending the frame.
Now, your concern is it worth of repairing and keeping the car or to get rid of it. And my suggestion is to get rid of it.
Because, no matter how well the repair is done, once the frame of the vehicle is bend, the car is never driven the same way as before. Your friend would certainly drive the car after being repaired, let him drive it, he will feel the car drifts when driving on the road. Therefore, this indicates the car is somewhat unsafe to be driven. He won't feel comfortable in it.
Now, assuming the car is insured, pay your deductible and let the insurance company takes care of dealing with the repair/body shop and the other vehicle's insurance. But, your friend first got to bring the damaged car to get an estimate and he'll decide whether to leave the car there for repair or to seek estimate at another shop, choice is up to him.
By looking at the damage, I think the repair cost would not exceeds the current value of the car, therefore, the insurance company suggests to repair it. Unless otherwise, if the repair cost exceeds the current value(this is good), the insurance company will compensate the owner at the lowest current value of the car. Then, take the money and buy another one.
