Located in Marina Bay, Gardens by the Bay is a key project in delivering the Singapore
government’s vision of transforming Singapore into a "City in a Garden." At a total of 101 hectares (250 acres), the Gardens by the Bay project comprises three distinct waterfront gardens – Bay South, Bay East and Bay Central. The commission to design the 54 hectare (134 acre) Bay South garden was won in 2006 by a team led by Grant Associates and including Wilkinson Eyre Architects, Atelier One, Atelier Ten, Land Design and Davis Langdon and Seah.

At the heart of Bay South Garden is the Cooled Conservatory Complex which is the focal point of the Gardens. The two main Conservatories cover an area in excess of 20,000 square meters (215,000 sq.ft.) and are among the largest climate-controlled glasshouses in the world. They provide a spectacular, all-weather attraction and comprise a 1.28 hectare (138,000 sq.ft.) cool dry conservatory (the "Flower Dome") and a 0.73 (79,000 sq.ft.) hectare cool moist conservatory (the "Cloud Forest"). Each has its own distinct character, but both explore the horticulture of those environments most likely to be affected by climate change.

World Architecture Festival 2012 Awards

The World Architectural Festival has just finished in Singapore, during which a shortlist of over 300 projects in 33 categories were be judged for the grand prize. We're suckers for an amazing building, and some of these beauties are like great fireworks on display - you can only ooh and aah. Soundforms, pictured, is actually a shell intended to host open-air performances - it's meant to enhance the sound of classical and orchestral music in its London Docklands setting.
Among our favourites are an Iranian ski resort that resembles a pure white honeycomb, a round green dome that looks as if it is about to fly back to the mother ship at any moment and a house shaped like a cloud. We'd love to know your personal winner!
Cloud House, Australia
McBride Charles Ryan is a company known for unusual structures. This cool, sky-inspired creation is actually part of an existing house - the little red cube inside is a kitchen!
iGuzzini Illuminazione Ibérica Headquarters, Spain
You'd expect the research centre for the development of lighting systems to get the illumination aspect right, and so it does.
Barin ski resort, Iran
Part igloo, part honeycomb, this resort is located in Shemshak, which is the second largest ski area in Iran.
Paul S Russell MD Museum of Medical History and Innovation, US
Massachusetts General Hospital may not be pretty but the Paul S Russell MD Museum of Medical History and Innovation, which is located near the main entrance, certainly is.
Busan Cinema Center, South Korea
Isn't it marvellous? The cinema centre looks like a giant steel wave frozen in time.
Vanke Triple V Gallery, China
'Pointy' is one word to describe this gallery, located in Tianjin.
Yurihonjo City Cultural Center, Japan
Interestingly, the structural design of the Yurihonjo City Cultural Center was inspired by the way mangrove trees grow. The complex houses a theatre, library and planetarium.
Reflections at Keppel Bay, Singapore
Unfortunately you have to be a resident of the luxury waterfront development by Studio Daniel Libeskind to explore the building from within, but we think the best view is from across the water anyway. Sniff.
Soweto Theatre, South Africa
The township of Jabulani, where this new theatre has been built, is known for having a culturally rich local community, making it a perfect location for this striking and inspiring building.
Sven-Harry's art museum, Sweden
Even if you know next to nothing about architecture, this is a pretty cool spot in Stockholm. It's worth a visit for the restaurant alone.
Island Retreat, New Zealand
Located on Waiheke Island, you simply can't beat the view from this modern villa designed by Fearon Hay Architects.
