I stroll along the beach in the early morning,
Folg Spuren da im Sande Vergangenes im Sinn.
following steps in sands, bearing events in the past in my mind,
wind blows and clouds shape as ever,
Und Wellen kommen, gehen, und Muscheln, farbverhüllt.
and waves come and go, and colors of shells are fading.
I wander along the beach in the sunset,
Folg Spuren da im Sande Vergangenes im Sinn.
following steps in sands, bearing events in the past in my mind,
the moon is dim and stars shine as ever,
and dreams go and back as waves will do alike.

While strolling along the beach in the morning,
Events in the past occur to me.
Oh, blowing wind and deforming clouds,
Upcoming waves and colors of shells!
While wandering along the beach in the evening,
Persons in the past occur to me.
Oh, upcoming waves and drawing-back waves,
Changing colors of the moon and stars!
