Disagree. Krug to non-champagne lover is like Lafite to mainlanders. For true champagne aficionados, on special occasions we drink Selossse: vintage or the single vineyard cuvees, or Substance. Easier drinking will be the Initial. Other brands favuored by connoisseurs are Egly-Ouriet, Billecart-Salmon, Winston Churchill by Pol Roger, or Cedric Bouchard.
Not that Krug is no good, indeed it is very good, and they created this Clos d' Ambonnay, which is at present the most expensive champagne on offer. But I tell you this, I went to Ambonay some 3 weeks ago and there is nothing special about that particular Clos. And the surrounding vineyards, which were classified as Grand Cru (indeed the whole Ambonnay village is classified as Grand Cru), could produce wine at the same quality for one-tenth of the price. Krug is all about marketing and image (think Lafite) and that is the nature of something owned by LVMH. Yes, this is like many other luxury brands in France and they are all owned by LVMH, the same people linked to the Insurance company AXA. The commercialization of these artesan products somehow stripped them of personalities. Look at Dom Perignon, also owned by LVMH; they produced oceans of this each year. Even in years when the quality was not up to standard and they should not have declared vintage (like 1993 and 2003), they still did as after all this is business and they need the money turnover. |
