1985年3月7日，集結美國45位當紅音樂人聯合獻唱的公益單曲 "We Are The World" 正式發行，由 Michael Jackson 與 Lionel Richie 兩位流行天王合寫，Quincy Jones 與 Michael Omartian 共同製作，僅花一個通宵的時間即錄製完成，用以聲援向當時非洲大饑荒受難民眾捐款的慈善活動 USA For Africa。
"We Are The World" 出版後廣獲全球樂迷關注和喜愛，除了拿下多國排行榜冠軍，也締造美國流行單曲最快銷售紀錄，更是首支榮獲多白金認證的單曲，全球累計賣逾2000萬張，名列實體單曲史上第八位，並接連獲頒三座葛萊美獎、一座全美音樂獎，以及一座全美民選獎，成績遠超越當初啟發此構想、由英國樂壇發起的 Band Aid 計畫的 "Do They Know It's Christmas?"。
"We Are The World" 的單曲及週邊商品最終成功幫助募得超過6300萬美金 (約現今的1.49億) 的善款，做為對非洲和美國的人道援助。
