Key Success for Marium Aquarium

It is not difficult to keep and maintain a marine aquarium. The following are key successful factors:

1. Stable water condition (temperature and chemical content), the bigger the aquarium, the more stable the condition (less fluctuation within a fixed time).
2. New tank need to be "mature" before you can keep fish without killing them. Let the nitrogen break down bacteria growth. It takes 1 ~2 months when amonium rise and drop to zero and then Nitride rise and drop to zero.
3. Good and sufficient bio filters such as wet/dry filters or fluidized sand bed filters.
4. Choose Hardy fish. For beginner, don't keep butterfly fish. Difficult to keep.

I prefer to keep a think sand bed for nitrate removal.

各師兄多多指教,中文手寫太慢,只好用英文打

The key success for marine aquarium is "Stable and good water condition and temperature". I will share my experience and what I know bit by bit.

1. Adequate tank size.
- Too small size cannot make it.
- Min 36". 48" is better. I used to have one 60". Moved house and made a 72" tank and a 40" tank
- forget about 24", 18" 30".... la unless you are real high hand or you don't want to keep the fish long.
- The bigger the size of the aquarium, the more stable the condition, less affected by temperature change, less affected my change in chemical condition that may be caused by a lot of reasons., the change will also be slower so that fish will be affected less.

Most of the fish live in my 72" big tank for 5+ years.
小丑 : 6.5 years
Most 神仙 6+ years . Include 法仙, 紫月, 南面, 奧州仙....
Butterfly fish can normally live for 3 years only. Some hardy one can live longer (e.g. 自眉)

If you belief me, just take what I say as some reference.

2. Good bio filter
- Wet dry filter, fluidized sand filters are good.
- I don't like or wont recommend under gravel filter (隔屎板). Though undergravel filter can work, in the long term, it trap too much dirt that the dirt will accumulate and cause sudden deteriation of water quality (反水!).
- Fluidized sand bed filter is efficient, compact and effective but I do not recommend it for newbie. Any problem in the pump or power outage will cause total break down of the bio filter and the filter cycle.
- Wet dry filter though is not the best is highly efficient and reliable for fish only tank. Not for coral reef tank. THe bio filter and bio cycle will not be affected by pump breakdown or power outage or accidentally shut down of pump. Once the water flow is resumed, the filter can be resumed. It also ass lots of air exchange function. For simplicity and efficiency, I recommend slightly over sized Wet dry filter using bio balls/plastic balls for fish only tank. High hand may consider over sized wet-dry filters using 珊瑚粒 to improve buffering capability.
- Oversize the bio filter a bit.

3. Do use thick sand bed with Plenum but not use it as undergravel filter.
- Use approx. 4" thick sand bed. I will use either 粗珊瑚沙 or 幼珊瑚粒.
- Put the sand bad on a plenum plate (e.g. 隔屎板/喉) or the like without pumping water through it. This form a stagnant water under the sand bed.
- This is very useful. 1. Better looking than barre base tank. 2. The oxygen rich zone of the sand bed acts as aerobic bio filter to break down amonia and nitrite. 3. The oxygen depletion zone (i.e. deep in the sand bed and the pelnum area) acts as anerobic bio filter to break down nitrate and carry out other bio filtration.
- This kill 2 birds by one stone.

4. DO add some coral skeleton
- This make the tank more beautiful
- Provide some shelter and natural environment for fish
- Acts as additional bio filter
- Not too many but not too little.
