Man Utd accept £80m Ronaldo bid

80M

登錄/註冊後可看大圖

Manchester United have accepted a world record offer of £80m from Real Madrid for Cristiano Ronaldo.

"United have agreed to give Real Madrid permission to talk to the player," said a statement from the English club.

It added that the decision came at Ronaldo's request after he "again expressed his desire to leave".

United described the offer for the 24-year-old forward as unconditional and added that they expected the matter to be concluded by 30 June.

It is understood that the transfer fee would be made available for manager Sir Alex Ferguson to invest in the transfer market.

Man Utd are the club for me - Ronaldo
Madrid signed Brazilian Kaka for a reported £56m earlier in the week, surpassing the previous world record fee of £45.6m Real paid for Zinedine Zidane in 2001.

That deal was sealed by the ambition of returning Real president Florentino Perez, who previously led the Spanish club from 2000 to 2006 - during the famous galacticos era.

And Perez had earlier made it clear that he would do "everything possible" to sign Ronaldo.

Madrid have also been linked with Liverpool's Xabi Alonso, Valencia's David Villa and Bayern Munich's Franck Ribery since Perez's unopposed election signalled the return of their vast spending.

But the BBC's Steve Kingstone in Madrid said that Real had yet to confirm any agreement to buy Ronaldo or the agreed price of £80m stated by United. Thursday is a public holiday in Madrid and no announcements are expected.

"This was one that was never ever going to go away," said BBC Radio 5 Live chief football correspondent Mike Ingham.

2009: Man Utd accept £80m bid from Real
"After the Champions League final he criticised Sir Alex Ferguson's tactics, he threw his toys out of the pram in the derby with Manchester City after he was substituted. He's been very high maintenance. And £80m is hard to resist.

"ersonally I'm very sorry to see him leave but it's absolutely inevitable. If hadn't been this summer it would have been next summer.

"This could mean they might be able to keep Carlos Tevez, maybe Wayne Rooney can be liberated."

Ronaldo, who joined United in 2003 from Sporting Lisbon for £12.2m, was strongly linked with a move to the Spanish capital last summer.

United lodged a complaint with world governing body Fifa last June over what they believed was a deliberate attempt by Real to unsettle the winger.

one-united
After a long drawn out saga that ran through the summer months the Portugal international said he was happy at Old Trafford and remained at United for the 2008-09 season.

"Now I understand I made the best decision," Ronaldo told Spanish sports paper Marca at the end of last summer. "I am with Manchester in body and soul.

But the speculation soured relations between the clubs and last December United manager Sir Alex Ferguson said that he would not "sell that mob a virus".

And despite Ronaldo's claim that he wanted to remain at Old Trafford he was the subject of constant speculation during the 2008-09 season and often gave mixed messages about his future.

If Ronaldo does sign for Madrid his last appearance for United would have been in the Champions League final that the Premier League champions lost 2-0 to Barcelona in Rome.

"History will remember him very well in terms of his contribution as a footballer, he'll also be seen as petulant, egotistical and stubborn but he's been a wonderful player," said United we Stand fanzine editor Andy Mitten.

It took time for Ronaldo to find his best form after joining United but became a pivotal player for United, who have won the last three Premier League titles.

In the 2007-08 season he scored 42 goals, which topped the previous club record for a midfielder held by George Best, and was on the scoresheet as United defeated Chelsea in the Champions League final.

Ronaldo was the top scorer last season with 26 goals, taking his total for United to 118 in 292 appearances

[News]Barcelona & Zlatan Ibrahimovic Reach Agreement - Spanish Media

A British radio station has stated that Carlos Tevez has signed a deal with Manchester City...
In the wake of the news that Carlos Tevez had sought advice from legendary Argentine and national team coach Diego Maradona, British radio station talkSPORT broadcast a statement earlier today stating that Tevez had signed a deal with Manchester City.
It has been suggested over the past few days that it has been a two horse race between Manchester United and City to secure the services of the pint-sized striker for next season, with Liverpool being ruled out for financial reasons, and other big clubs seeming to fall by the wayside as the scenario draws to an end.

The rights to Tevez are owned by Kia Joorabchian, a British-born, Iranian businessman who has been negotiating with both Manchester-based clubs to decide the future of the Argentina international.

Tevez himself has reportedly been slightly unhappy at missing out on some big games at Old Trafford due to Alex Ferguson's rotational policies, so a deal with City would no doubt guarantee more first-team action and an increased wage packet, but no European football - something that Tevez has been afforded during his last two years with the Red Devils.
United have shown reluctance over the past weeks in paying the second part of the money they would have to part with in order to make Tevez's move a permanent fixture, even enlisting the help of attorneys in an attempt to find loopholes in the contract that would allow Sir Alex Ferguson's side to acquire the forward for free.

However, the whole affair now seems to be coming to an end, with the player himself said to make a decision on his future that will either refute or affirm the claims made by the British media after his involvement on Wednesday when Argentina take on Ecuador.

Wigan confirm Valencia bids

Wigan chairman Dave Whelan has told Sky Sports News that Manchester United have made cash offers for Antonio Valencia.

It was reported at the weekend that Premier League champions United and Real Madrid had bid in excess of £16million for the Ecuadorian.

Real - who are set to pay United £80m for Cristiano Ronaldo - have since stated that they have not shown an interest in Valencia since January.

However, Whelan has declared that United have been in contact with JJB Stadium officials for the past two to three months and that they have also submitted offers.

He told Sky Sports News when asked about Valencia: "They (United) have been in touch with us and we will be starting negotiations very shortly, I would imagine.

"United have been in touch with us over Antonio over the last two or three months, expressing an interest and putting cash offers on the table."

He added: "Things will develop over the next seven to 14 days."

Real linked with move for Arsenal defender Clichy

With Real Madrid planning to continue their wild spending spree, Arsenal's Gael Clichy has become the latest player linked with a big money move to the Bernabeu.

Various reports suggest Real coach Manuel Pellegrini has identified Gael Clichy as the solution to the club's defensive problems.

The young left-back has become a key member of Arsene Wenger's squad and Arsenal will be desperate to hold on to the 23-year-old Frenchman.

Another reported target for Madrid has been Cesc Fabregas, but Arsenal fans will have been relieved to hear the captain reassert his commitment to the Gunners.

"Of course I see my future at Arsenal. I have a very long contract with the club," Fabregas said in an interview with Arsenal TV Online.

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez is set to continue splashing the cash, saying he believes signing the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Kaka will strengthen the club financially - despite the huge initial outlay on transfer fees.

As well as the two Arsenal stars, Madrid continue to be linked with David Villa, David Silva, Franck Ribery, Raul Albiol and Xabi Alonso.

None of those players are likely to come cheap, and questions have already been raised about how Madrid will be financing the transfers and if the club will be swamped by huge debts as a result of their dealings this summer.

However, Perez, who is a hugely-successful businessman but insists the money spent will be the club's and not his own, is adamant that will not be the case and is confident the players they bring in will end up paying for themselves.

When asked about the possibility of Madrid being saddled with big debts, Perez told La Gazzetta dello Sport: "On the contrary, we believe we can improve our accounts by aiming for three goals - increasing ticket sales, increasing bank loans and increasing the club's economic value."

He added: "Real Madrid takes about 400 million (euros) a year, the fruit of three sources of income - a third from ticket sales, a third from television rights and a third from merchandising."

Perez's comments follow on from what he said last week about Ronaldo and how it was necessary to weigh the transfer fee against what the club could recoup by having the FIFA World Player of the Year on board.

"What I am sure of is that which seems expensive is the cheapest," said Perez, who during his previous spell as Madrid president from 2000-06 sanctioned the big-money signings of Luis Figo, Zinedine Zidane, Ronaldo and David Beckham.

"In my last era the cheapest was Zidane, who seemed very expensive because we paid 73million (euros) for him."

Perez returned to power at the start of this month unopposed after no other candidate put themselves forward for election, and the 62-year-old wasted no time in implementing his plan to return Madrid to former glories.

Within 24 hours of his arrival, Perez presented Manuel Pellegrini as Madrid's new coach, and seven days later the capture of Kaka was completed.

Ronaldo's arrival now seems imminent, while discussions regarding Valencia striker Villa are believed to be at an advanced stage.

"I want to relaunch the tradition of Real Madrid, which is to be faithful in providing a good show and giving the fans enthusiasm," Perez added in today's Gazzetta.

"In order to do that we have to focus on three crucial pillars - to play with great world-famous players, great Spanish players and great youth players.

"I want to recreate a Real Madrid that makes history."

Man Utd target Vucinic h: h:

MAN U AGAIN

If Cristiano Ronaldo leaves for Real Madrid, Manchester United apparently plan to spend some of the money from his transfer on Roma striker Mirko Vucinic.

The English champions look set for an £80m windfall and are ready to reinforce their squad with a number of high profile signings.

Franck Ribery and Karim Benzema have been strongly linked with the Red Devils, but Vucinic has been on their shortlist for a while now.

Earlier this season, the Montenegro international revealed how United came in with an offer for him last summer.

Roma rejected the bid and soon after United turned their attention to Bulgaria international Dimitar Berbatov.

The 25-year-old has enjoyed his best ever season in Roma colours, scoring 17 goals in 36 appearances.

Despite being in some financial difficulty, the Giallorossi are reluctant to sell Vucinic, who recently penned a new four-year deal.

However, Roma would consider an offer of between £25 and £28m for Vucinic, according to Il Corriere dello Sport.

Milan Sign Edin Dzeko - Report

The Rossoneri have a signature on a pre-agreement. The next step is to convince Wolfsburg...
12 Jun 2009 13:31:29

Milan target Edin Dzeko has signed for the club, but fans will have to wait as it is only a pre-agreement, according to Sky Sports Italia.

The Italian news station claims the Bosnian hitman has put pen to a pre-agreement which will give the Italians first choice. Milan now have to convince the Germans of parting company with their man.

The pre-contract is based on an eventual agreement between Milan and Wolfsburg. So far, the Bundesliga outfit have claimed their man was not for sale, but Dzeko's decision to sign for Milan is likely to put the pressure on the Germans.

According to reports, Milan will try their luck again and a meeting with Wolfsburg directors is scheduled for next week. Voices claim the Italians will raise the stakes in terms of an offer.

It suggested the German side wants €30million for their man, but the Rossoneri are only willing to stretch to €20m. The player's apparent will to join Milan is in the club's favour

Agent: Sakho will join Arsenal or Bayern soon

Paris Saint Germain defender Mamadou Sakho will leave France this summer with Arsenal or Bayern Munich his likely destination according to his agent Tim Hager. Speaking exclusively to Sport.co.uk Hager revealed the Gunners are the front-runners for the 19 -year-old, although the German giants have also expressed an interest.

Sakho's representative hinted, however, that Manchester United were the player's first choice but were yet to make a formal approach, while European champions Barcelona had also tentatively shown interest.

Talking to Sport.co.uk Editor Nigel Brown, Hager said:

「He will be moving clubs this summer. Arsenal are interested, but the club are too cheap at the moment.」

When asked if Arsenal were likely to meet PSG's valuation, Hager replied:

「Yes, I think a transfer will happen soon. He wants to play football in England and Arsenal are a good club but Manchester United is a better club.

「Arsenal want him, but Manchester United not yet. Barcelona in Spain, and Bayern Munich in the German league are also interested. They are all the teams at the moment that are interested in the player.

「But the most interested club is Arsenal, they want him the most. Bayern Munich is a top European club, so I think it will be Bayern or Arsenal.」

Speaking about the qualities which Sakho would potentially brings to the Premier League, Hager continued:

「He is not a Laurent Blanc. He is the 'new Lillian Thuram,' or probably the 'new Marcel Desailly...Yes , the 'new Marcel Desailly.」

Sakho is a French Under-21 international and the youngest player to have captained PSG in Ligue 1 having done so at the age 17 years and 8 months.

Official: Milan Sign Defender Aly Cissokho From Porto

Milan have captured French wing-back Aly Cissokho from Porto for a reported €15m.

Milan have announced the official signing of French wing-back Aly Cissokho from Porto. The Rossoneri will reportedly pay the Portuguese club €15million plus €1m for every trophy that the Rossoneri will lift during his time at the San Siro.

Milan beat off competition from French giants Lyon to secure Cissokho’s services after general manager Adriano Galliani traveled to Porto to complete negotiations last night.

“The overnight negotiation was intense,” Galliani admitted to the Diavoli’s official website.

“We think Cissokho is very strong, as proved by the interest in his services from important European clubs, even in the decisive hours that led to an agreement.

“But in the end, our long-standing footballing friendship with Porto directors prevailed, as we have also co-founded the G-14 in the past.

“The acquisition of Thiago Silva, who has yet to turn 25, and Cissokho, not yet 23, answer to a precise project: a young, fresh and competitive team and with the books balanced.

“That’s the path we will keep following over the next days and weeks.”

Real Madrid Offer Inter Higuain Plus Cash For Ibrahimovic

屈機
Inter's asking price for the Swedish superstar may be too steep, even for Los Merengues, but Gonzalo Higuain could be used as bait...

14 Jun 2009 09:37:59

The transfer merry go round continues to spin almost out of control in Spain, with Real Madrid now after Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Until recently, Ibrahimovic was widely expected to be involved in an exchange with Barcelona for Samuel Eto'o, while David Villa was supposed to sign for Real Madrid.

Both deals, however, have stumbled, leading the clubs involved to covet each other's targets.

According to Marca, Real Madrid have made enquiries about Zlatan Ibrahimovic, but have been told that he will cost no less than a whopping €94 million.

However, Florentino Perez is confident of reducing the fee significantly by including 21-year-old Argentine hitman Gonzalo Higuain in the deal.

The involvement of Higuain may come as a surprise to many, given that he was widely regarded to have been Los Merengues' best player last season.會

[News] 馬甸尼加盟車路士? 做2 5 仔

AC Milan legend Paolo Maldini could be poised to join the backroom staff at Chelsea, BBC Sport understands.

A deal would mean the veteran Italian, who spent his 25-year career at the San Siro, teaming up again with coach Carlo Ancelotti, who left Milan for Chelsea.

The 40-year-old left-back, who only quit playing at the end of the 2008-09 season, won seven Serie A titles and five Champions League trophies.

Talks are understood to be ongoing, although a role has not been specified.

BBC Radio 5 live's senior football reporter, Ian Dennis, said: "I understand that a high-level meeting took place between Carlo Ancelotti, Paolo Maldini and Roman Abramovich at Chelsea's training ground on Friday.

"There's been talk of him being either a general manager or a joint-assistant coach alongside Ray Wilkins, but at the moment any role for Madini is unspecified.

"He's only just retired from a glittering career and it's a question of whether he is willing to embark straight away into a coaching career, but it seems clear that Ancelotti wants him as part of his backroom staff."

Maldini, who made more than 900 appearances for Milan and a record 126 for Italy, speaks good English and is thought to be unhappy with the lack of opportunities at the San Siro since his retirement.

Ancelotti has agreed to work with current Chelsea coach Wilkins, who speaks Italian, but he is also thought to want to bring in a fellow countryman.

And with Chelsea still looking to replace defensive coach specialist Steve Clarke, who joined Gianfranco Zola at West Ham earlier this year, Maldini could fit the bill.

Carlos Tevez to sign for Manchester City

去左 MAN C h:
Carlos Tevez is ready to stun Manchester United and sign for arch-rivals City.

The Argentine international will switch loyalties at the end of this month when his two-year loan at Old Trafford expires.

Manager Sir Alex Ferguson contacted Tevez during last week to try to persuade him to stay with United. Old Trafford insiders fear that approach has failed. Fergie made the call on the eve of the announcement that United had agreed to sell Cristiano Ronaldo to Real Madrid in a world record £80million deal.

Tevez was in Quito, Ecuador, on international duty with Argentina. He intends to take a family holiday and then accept a £140,000-a-week deal with City that dwarfs the contract offered by United.

It will be a bitter blow to United fans, who acclaimed the striker's hard-working style.

Liverpool have also made a late move in the Tevez race.

But their hopes of spreading a £25m deal over fouryears will not appeal to businessman Kia Joorabchian, who retains ownership of the player at the moment.

Joorabchian has a solid working relationship with City manager Mark Hughes. And the City boss said: "I admire Tevez as a player and I like the way he approaches the game of football - that's been recognised by most managers."

Hughes also insists his two Brazil internationals - Robinho and Elano - are staying at Eastlands. Robinho, signed from Real Madrid for a British record £32.5m, has hinted at a switch to Barcelona, while Elano has been linked with Inter Milan.

Hughes said: "Robinho says he's happy and wants to stay here and Elano is contracted for another two years."

Manchester United Approach Barcelona For Eto'o - Report
ETOO h: h:

Some of Cristiano Ronalo's monumental transfer fee could be spent on trying to lure the Barca forward to Old Trafford...

Having seen Cristiano Ronaldo leave the club, Manchester United could be attempting to ease their pain by signing Samuel Eto'o.

According to The Times, Sir Alex Ferguson has set his sights on capturing the 28-year-old Cameroonian striker, who scored for Barcelona against United in the Champions League final.

Eto'o's future at the Camp Nou is still in doubt, with the likes of Manchester City, Chelsea, Liverpool and Inter Milan all showing a recent interest in signing the player.

Indeed, Manchester City are said to be preparing a €29 million offer, but United are confident that their status and their healthy relationship with Barca will allow them to negotiate a deal for a lesser fee.

With Carlos Tevez also almost certain to leave Old Trafford, Man United are in desperate need of attacking re-inforcements.

Meanwhile, despite recent comments from the club suggesting Eto'o might stay in Barcelona, his future does remain less than certain.

Liverpool and Man Utd confirms new transfer deals

水魚

Daily Mirror reports that Liverpool and Man Utd both will reveal their new signigs over the weekend.

Glen Johnson will complete his £18 million move from Portsmouth to Liverpool. Man Utd looks certain to complete a £16 million move for Wigan winger Antonio Valencia.
Liverpool was close to bringing Johnson in during the January transfer window, but nothing happened and he stayed at Fratton Park. Johnson has also said that he was happy at Portsmouth and could have stayed.

Money talks in the game today and with such fees paid for players, there are of course enough reasons to understand whiy Portsmouth and Wigan will say yes to a sale.

Aston Villa star Nigel Reo-Coker and Tottenham's Tom Huddlestone set for swap deal

Aston Villa boss Martin O’Neill is offering Nigel Reo-Coker to his Spurs counterpart Harry Redknapp in a swap deal for Tom Huddlestone.

The Tottenham manager had contacted O’Neill because he wants to sign Villa winger Ashley Young.

England starlet Young, 23, is mulling over his future at Villa Park following Gareth Barry’s £12million move to Manchester City.

And Redknapp has offered two players from David Bentley, Jermaine Jenas and Huddlestone for £20m-rated Young.

O’Neill is very reluctant to lose Young but is still in touch with Redknapp, who is anxious to shake up his squad.

And the pair have discussed another possible swap deal involving Reo-Coker for fellow midfielder Huddlestone.

Redknapp was interested in Londoner Reo-Coker, 25, in January and also tried to sign him while he was in charge of Portsmouth.

The star captained West Ham in the 2006 FA Cup Final at the age of 21 but has lost his place at Villa despite costing £7.5m in 2007.

While Huddlestone, 22, signed from Derby County in 2005 for £2.5m, is known for his precise passing and could help ease the big loss of England star Barry. Casual talks between O’Neill and Redknapp are continuing, with one source telling Mirror Sport the duo are “playing tennis, bouncing ideas off each other”.

But Villa insist there has been no official approach yet for Young, who is also wanted by Carlo Ancelotti’s Chelsea.

Bayern Munich have admitted to making an approach for Chelsea full-back Jose Bosingwa.

The German giants have indentified the rampaging Portuguese defender as a top priority in their search for fresh faces this summer.

An agreement is yet to be struck with his current employers, but Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge is hoping an accord can be reached.

"We are holding talks, but we still need the approval of Chelsea," he told Kicker.

"He is one of the best right full-backs around."

Bayern are in the market for a right-back after seeing Willy Sagnol forced into retirement and Massimo Oddo fail to shine during a loan spell from AC Milan.

Relaxed
The Bundesliga side are aware that they will need to sell in order to fund further moves in the market, with Tim Borowski, Christian Lell and Andreas Ottl expected to be heading for the Allianz Arena exits.

One of those who will definitely not be leaving though, according to Rummenigge, is French playmaker Franck Ribery, who continues to be linked with Real Madrid, Chelsea and Manchester United.

Bayern president Franz Beckenbauer had hinted on Wednesday that the former Marseille ace could be sold for the right price, but that suggestion has been dashed by the club's chairman.

"We all agree, including Franz Beckenbauer, that we will do all we can to keep hold of Franck," said Rummenigge.

"I am quite relaxed about the Ribery issue because nothing can happen without Bayern.

"Even (coach, Louis) Van Gaal knows what an exceptional player Ribery is. Franck is one of the best three players in the world and we know what we have in him."

Barcelona Set To Take Robinho On Loan

仲唔係哩個咁突然 h:
仲使玩

Barcelona look set to complete a deal that will see them sign Robinho on loan from Manchester City for one season with a view to making the move permanent next year, Catalan television are reporting.

TV3 state that an agreement will be done in the next few hours after the Blaugrana made their interest official and talks to iron out the details are going on at the moment.

Robinho has stated that he would welcome a move back to the Spanish league and Pep Guardiola is a known fan of the Brazilian star after he stated he would have liked to have signed him 12 months ago.

Reports in both England and Spain have suggested that the 25-year-old has a clause in his contract allowing him to leave if a team in the Champions League make a move for him and Barça have used that.

Talks about a possible move for Robinho are rumoured to have begun when Manchester City enquired about Samuel Eto'o and a deal for the Cameroonian striker could be part of the whole package.

With Barcelona wanting Robinho to bolster their options on the left next term after Franck Ribery was put out of reach by Bayern Munich, the English side are keen on adding a new striker to their ranks.

Eto'o knows that Barcelona would prefer to cash in on him than meet his contract demands and Manchester City maybe pressing the Catalans to make a decision about his future with Robinho's status at stake.

Cristiano Ronaldo's £80m Real deal stalls on Manchester United star's contract demands

Cristiano Ronaldo's £80million move from Manchester United to Real Madrid has hit a snag over the Portugal star's image rights.

The Spanish giants want to conclude the transfer before the weekend but his agent Jorge Mendes is still locked in talks over the finer details of his contract, according to reports in Spain.

The 24-year-old will be paid a salary of close to £10m a year - about £200,000 a week - but the distribution of cash from commercial deals is still being debated.

Madrid had expected to share his image rights 50-50; it is the business model they favour and is understood to have been agreed with Kaka.

But Ronaldo's camp are reluctant to share earnings from deals signed with the likes of Nike and Banco Espirito Santo, even though he would receive a cut in return from the sale of Real Madrid merchandise bearing his name.
Commercial earnings on this basis are inevitably variable but Madrid president Florentino Perez is reported to have moved to assure Ronaldo that he would earn at least another £2.75m a year from the club for his image rights.
The two sides are expected to reach a deal, but Madrid are wary that they cannot give up too much ground if they are to meet their financial estimates that the huge transfer can be profitable.
His prospective new employers want to present Kaka and Ronaldo together at the Bernabeu at the end of the month - likely to be June 29 or 30.

Barcelona's €50 Million Offer For David Villa Includes Juan Mata

David Villa says he knows where he will playing next season and if it's in Barcelona it could be alongside Juan Mata...

Barcelona's proposed offer for David Villa with players on loan in return is not as clear cut as was first reported because the European champions want Juan Mata included, according to a report.

The Blaugrana confirmed that they held talks with Valencia last weekend and were set to follow up with a bid of €50 million, with Bojan Krkic and Martin Caceres spending a year at the Mestalla.

But that fee was not just for Villa as Barcelona also stated that for such a huge amount that they wanted Mata thrown in the deal as well, La Sexta have now revealed.

Barca are said to be Valencia's preferred destination for their striker to go as Real Madrid's interest looks set to be rekindled, but the new twist has meant they could now be rejected.

The Spanish media still believe that Villa will go to the Bernabeu, but the two Catalan sports dailies believe that a deal will be struck if and when Samuel Eto'o agrees to leave Camp Nou.

唔會掛
之前好似講韋拿個價大約係40-45m
計埋bojan, caceres既借用費, 約2-3m
MATA = 10M

City eye top four as Santa Cruz signs up for £18m

Manchester City have agreed an £18million deal to sign Roque Santa Cruz from Blackburn as they begin to build a squad to break into the Premier League's top four.
Manager Mark Hughes will finally be reunited with the striker he wanted to bring with him from

Santa Cruz will cost £15m, with the rest of the fee dependant on appearances and team success, but he is likely to have to compete for a place with Carlos Tevez - who is ready to reject Manchester United and Liverpool - and Barcelona's Samuel Eto'o next season.
City are confident they are making progress in their pursuit of two of the most respected goalscorers playing in Europe - despite Eto'o's exorbitant wage demands of £192,000-a-week after tax - as chairman Khaldoon al-Mubarak continues to back Hughes in the transfer market.
The signing of Santa Cruz, who missed the end of last season with a knee injury, shows that the manager remains in charge of the club's transfer targets.
Al-Mubarak has admitted his frustration at the perception of City as a club who do not deserve a place at the game's top table. The Cruz deal highlights his reluctance to pay wildly inflated fees, as the initial figure is £5m short of the price Blackburn quoted them in January when their bids were unsuccessful.
Hughes first signed Santa Cruz for Blackburn from Bayern Munich for £3.8m in 2007 after he had fallen out of favour at the German club. He scored 23 goals for Rovers in his first season but suffered with injury last term after the Welshman had move on.
