On Mar 16, 1979, M released the single POP MUZIK. It was the result of an ongoing experiment by English musician Robin Scott, who was determined to craft a fresh, clever take on danceable pop. At the time, disco was drawing huge crowds to the dancefloor, while punk was shaking things up with a raw, defiant edge. Robin, meanwhile, had a broader vision: to reflect on 25 years of popular music and capture it in one smartly packaged track. POP MUZIK turned out to be both playful and oddly profound. It soared to number one in the United States and reached number two in the UK, only just missing the top spot thanks to Art Garfunkel’s Bright Eyes.
