Cannot agree with you more here. When my father gave me the first taste of red wine as a teen in the early 70s, I thought it was awful and like pouring dishwashing liquid on your tongue. Even eventually I discovered the pleasures of red and white wine, it took some years before I developed a true love for Champagne.
Back to this Conferee business, and give them the due credit, I cannot say I ever had a bad wine with the label. And I am sure the no1 criteria for them is quality. However, this is done by a panel, and I do have issues with consensus results; please refer to my bit on " the best Whisky in the world". A panel's endorsement would end up giving you a wine that tries to please everyone, is easy on the palate, but does not give you individuality and intellectual challenge.
Worse still, other factors could also count potentially towards your wine being awarded with the label. Remember, Burgundy is a small, close-knitted community where anyone knows everyone, or everybody is somehow related. Favorable ones would be how often the panel members go to your home for dinners, how many cases of wine you send as Christmas presents, whether the members are your son/father/sister etc. in-laws, how much you have donated to the local charity. Negative ones would be if the member, as your neighbor, has a backyard which is your dog's favourite shitting ground, your son is bonking their daughters, or if you have slept with their wives.
I mean no offense, and those so called Chevaliers I met before in that dinner, and in similar dinners organized by the HK chapter of the Bordeaux equivalent, left me poor impressions of these organizations, which as I said politely before, were so sure of themselves, and regarded themselves as the ultimate judges of the quality of the respective regions, and that outsiders should listen to them as they know best. Well, one thing for sure to me is, no matter how good the food or the wine is, I don' t want to dine with a bunch of wankers surrounding me. |
