The "upward thrust" actually lightens the feeling of the heavy roof. They are like the tip of the wings of an eagle. Furthermore, the main beam were usually made of one piece of wood, which will bend upon the heavy weight of the tiles. So in the old days, the builder deliverately create the upward thrust for optical effect and to avoid the bending of the beam by natural cause. |
